After the welcoming speech, our Desk Officer HQ for humanitarian aid and development cooperation, Constanze Bönig, vividly presented the principles and mechanisms of our work to the 60 colleagues of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute in a seminar.
Kristin Schalkowski then gave us a guided tour of the Institute's premises and gave us a picture of the Institute's history. In conversation with the director of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Thomas C. Mettenleiter, Prof. Dr. Franz J. Conraths (Vice President and Head of the Institute for Epidemiology), Prof. Dr. Cornelia Silaghi (Head of the Institute for Infectious Medicine), and Prof. Dr. Martin H. Groschup (Head of the Institute for New and Novel Animal Disease Pathogens) we talked about the challenges of disease control in East Africa in the field of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and the threat posed by new vector-borne diseases.
Dr. Conrad Freuling from the Institute of Molecular Virology and Cell Biology brought us up to date on rabies in Germany, Europe and Africa over lunch.
This year, VSF GErmany together with the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) will start the joint project BUILD (Boosting Uganda's Investments in Livestock Development) in Uganda. We are looking forward to this cooperation and to future joint projects.
